Autonomous Vehicles at Cheltenham Science Festival

We have represented the Department of Engineering and the Department of Informatics at the Cheltenham Science Festival 2018. This festival is one of the biggest science festivals in the UK (in previous years there were up to 45,000 visitors). The participation of our University was under the theme of Autonomous Vehicles and the future of driving.

Representing computer science, I presented some recent and future activities in our department. These include teaching cars how to drive safely and detecting dangerous situations. We had brought a model car that participants could drive and afterwards they could independently rate the safety of pedestrians and the safety of the car.

It was not clear whether the car would survive the close to 100 driving sessions of different drivers throughout the day. We were very happy that we could take it back to Leicester in one piece.
